| Ensure
affordability. End Homelessness. Build better communities.
The Homes for All! 2006 Convention presented a variety of
actions that citizens and community leaders can take to
address a worsening housing situation facing the state. Although
most Minnesotans are well housed, a closer look at the
numbers reveals gaps.
-
Minnesota
has the highest homeownership rate in the nation.
However, the ownership rate of African American
households in Minnesota ranks 45th out of
50 states and the District of Columbia.
-
More
than 200,000 Minnesotan households pay over half their
income on housing
-
The
number of Minnesotans who are experiencing
homelessness or precariously housed has grown from
7,980 in 1991 to 20,347 in 2003, an increase of more
than 150 percent.
Although
these facts may seem daunting, there are solutions to
these problems. Together, we—Minnesota’s business
community, faith communities, government agencies,
nonprofits, philanthropic community, and elected
officials—can take action on solutions that will close
the housing gap and achieve Homes for All!
